Next year, I will be heading to the incredible country of Nepal, to begin my journey of climbing to the top of Mount Everest. Whilst there, I am planning to explore the vibrant, energetic city of Kathmandu.
I have been compiling a list of my top things I am planning to do whilst In Kathmandu (and it looks as though I will be spoilt for choice!). I have shared these with you below. Enjoy!
1.) Visit Swayambhu and Take In The City Views
Swayambhu (otherwise known as “The Monkey Temple”) is an ancient temple in the heart of Kathmandu. Once here, you can take in some of the most incredible panoramic views of the city, but only after walking up 300+ steps that lead to the temple (which will be additional practice for my Everest expedition!)
You will also have the beautiful monkeys to observe and take photos of.
2.) Explore The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bhaktapur
A short drive outside of the city is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bhaktapur.
There are plenty of places to explore by foot within this ancient city, such as the Nyatapola Temple, Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, 55 Window Palace, the Dattatreya Temple and also Pujari Math.
3.) Have Fun In The Thamel District
Thamel is known as the liveliest neighbourhood in the city, known for its narrow, colourful alleys that are filled with eateries, little shops and vendors! You can also visit the Garden of Dreams whilst you’re here, which is a pretty park and peaceful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. I’ll be looking forward to spending a few hours relaxing there.
4. Eat Momos!
Momo is a famous Nepalese dish originating from Tibet, which are similar to a dumplings and super inexpensive. They are known to be delicious and I am planning on having a Momos feast whilst in Nepal!
5. Hike in Shivapuri National Park
I can’t visit Kathmandu and not hike, right?
Shivapuri National Park is a beautiful break from the city life of Kathmandu and sits around an hour outside of the city. There are many beautiful trails that weave through summits, forests and vistas. It’s a great area for a one-day hike (more Everest prep!)
