Overview

Mount Korab’s peak forms a frontier between both Albania and Macedonia and is the highest mountain in both countries. The mountain itself has a number of peaks, yet its highest is Golem Korab, standing at 2,764m, landing it the role of the 4th highest peak in the Balkan Peninsula and the 12th highest peak in Europe (by country).

The mountain is rarely crowded and offers adventure all year round. Hikers can choose to do a single day summit or a multi-day summit, dependant on the speed they wish to complete the ascent in and their fitness abilities.

One of the things to be aware of during Korabs ascent, is the shepherd’s dogs. If you do happen to encounter any of these dogs, it is best to avoid contact, do not engage with them and try to signal the shepherd for help.

How to get there

There are several options you can take to reach Mount Korab. The simplest option is to say overnight in Mavrovi Anovi (located on the R1202). You can then leave and head towards Debar, a nearby city in the morning.

After 9km, turn right at the bridge and continue a further 12km towards the ‘Pobeda’ border tower. At the next junction you take an upwards left. You can leave your car at the border tower. It is then time to start your ascent up Mount Korab! You will see the trail clearing marked from here onwards.

The Route

The trail begins by winding into the forest; it is important to stay on the track and not veer of course as bears can often pass this point whilst making their way to the river.

Once you have made your way through the forest, follow the shepherds trail to the watchtower. Once you reach the watchtower, use this as an opportunity to fill up you water as you may find it more difficult to find a water source further into the route.

From here, the track leans left and you may find red and white target markers from this point onwards.

You will now make your way uphill, towards the grassy hills of Nistrovski Korab, along the ridge while walking parallel to the Korab ridge. You can choose to head straight to the summit, however you will find yourself having to forage through the tumuli, so I would recommend not doing so.

Once you reach the edge of the valley, head northwards downhill along the ridge, climbing over Mal Korab along the way.

As you meet the summit ridge you, will pass by a small spring. You will now be near the final part of the summit, which is a simple hike through the grass. You will find the summit marked with a white trim point and the Macedonian flag on one side and the Albanian flag on the other.
